Included are 4 blocks, each with 10 knobbed cylinders. The blocks differ by a combination of diameter and height, so the child naturally progresses from simpler comparisons to more challenging ones (in block 4 they also compare with the depth of the hole).
The cylinders are grasped by the knob (typically with three fingers), which supports a proper grip, hand–eye coordination, and precision of movement. The material is suitable as preparation for holding a pencil and writing.
Knobbed cylinders are among the classic sensory Montessori materials that primarily develop vision, while naturally engaging other senses as well. Thanks to systematically graded dimensions, the child practices perceiving differences (thick–thin, wide–narrow, tall–short, large–small) and learns precise, controlled movement when inserting them into the holes.

What the child develops while working:
Brief working procedure: the block is carried with both hands by the outer ends; work proceeds from left to right. The cylinders are removed by the knob and placed on a mat, then the child learns to return the cylinders to the correct holes. It is recommended to always start with one block and gradually add others, including games such as “find two the same” or working with eyes covered.
