The sets differ in wood type, shade, and weight: light (pale), medium-heavy (darker), and heavy (darkest). The child first sorts by touch, then verifies the result visually.
The tablets are designed for direct manipulation: comparing in both palms (the “weight” principle), pairing and sorting, including with closed eyes to strengthen concentration and sensitivity.
Start with the greatest contrast (lightest vs. heaviest), then add the medium weight and finally combine all three sets. Great for pair play as well and for developing the concepts “lighter/heavier”.
Moyo Montessori weight tablets help children sensitively perceive differences between light, medium-heavy, and heavy objects. The tablets can be compared in the hands, matched into pairs, and gradually sorted into groups – first with the biggest difference (lightest vs. heaviest), later also including the medium weight. The color/shade serves as visual control.
Benefits for the child:
The activity can be extended by weighing on a real scale – for children, a two-pan balance scale is usually the clearest.
